My book was published 1 month ago after 4,5 years’ of writing. Looking back on all this time I can’t help myself to wonder what I have learned. Thus, I put the lessons together and came up with 7 points that I think are important:
1. Writing is learning
If you ask me something that is written in the book today before I wrote the book, I would have probably had some sort of an answer but it would not be as good as information I have right now. This is to say that writing is actually a great way to organize our thinking.
Most people don’t have journals, to do lists, and to diaries. I think it is a shame. As human beings we are able to process only that many ideas, but we also have a limited cognition. This is to say that writing is a great way to organize thoughts.
As such, writing a book is an ultimate way learn something and become an expert on a certain topic. And while it is not the only way to become an expert, I will always insist on writing notes, books, and blog posts as a way to keep myself one step ahead in my field of knowledge.
2. In 4,5 years you can do anything
They say that it takes 10.000h of purposeful practice to become an expert in a certain area. I don’t know whether I spend 10.000h writing this book, but certainly I did practice many hours practicing different skills, such as writing, and learning about topics of marketing & happiness. And the best part is that by doing so is that these skills will definitely spillover to other parts of my life and make me a better person overall.
Still, I did not think I needed all the 4,5 years writing this book, but I did need to do some work to sustain myself, socialize, procrastinate (a lot) and do a whole other bunch of other things at the same time. Indeed, if I worked on my book nonstop 8 hours a day, the work could have been done in a half year. Still, I believe that this time was necessary as I needed to develop discipline, do research, and process a lot of information, meaning that this perhaps this process took exactly as long as it needed to take. Having this in mind I am sure that the next book, or life project, will take a fraction of time, as I already have a good basis and knowledge to take on any challenge in life.
Still, I can’t stop to think where I could have been if I had spent 4,5 years doing something else completely. I could, for example, have learned how to make money online. If I did so, I would probably have already achieved a lot, maybe even becoming completely financially independent, which is my next goal in life. Similarly, looking into future, I should also ask myself what should I be doing going forward, as 4,5 years will certainly pass one way or another, so it really depends on me where I want to be after all this time.
3. Getting closer to my true aim
While writing my book, one of the big realizations I had was that practicing a skill gets us one step closer to our true aim. Thus, while my book while is a master piece, it is also only a test product. It helped me to realize what would be a better product, and same will be true with the next product, and the one after, indefinitely. And with every product I will realize more and more what I want and what it takes to do better.
In this way, one of my online mentors, Tai Lopez, said that we always start from zero when we are learning a new skill. In case of making money, for example, we can’t expect to go from Zero to a Million. It is just not possible. So it does not matter whether we are 10 years old or 80 years old, if we want to get rich we need to go through all the necessary steps, and no one skips steps because we are special. Thus, my first step is blog. Now, it is my book. Still, after my book there are many more steps I want to take and with every additional step I hope I will get closer and closer to my ideal final product!
4. What its like to be a published writer
Whenever I meet a new people in my life they naturally ask me what I do for living. I always reply that I am an author. And while most people don’t meet published writers every day in their lives they always have many questions about it. Interestingly enough, every person has their own questions, which is to say that it never gets boring to try to guess what they will ask next.
Personally, I feels good to be able to talk about a subject that you passionately like, so even if people ask me the same questions over and over again, I have no problems answering these questions, as every time I do my answer get better and better in my mind. Thus, I am not only doing it for other people, but I am also doing it for myself.
5. Written is different from selling
To be honest, sales are not going as fast as I hoped. They are definitely not enough to sustain my lifestyle. Still, I am not desperate. It has only been one month since the publication and I did not do much extra promotional work when I was writing my book as all my attention was on finishing the book, so obviously this has to be one of the future steps.
Still, I don’t think that even with extra promotion I will get sales up to a desired degree since the world of publishing is very competitive, meaning that it is hard to stand out. Still, it is not a problem, because more importantly than sales I can show to other people, to show off my expertise, and be personally proud of, boosting my self-esteem.
6. Reading can change lives
I definitely think that people should be reading more, since some of the most intelligent people in the world have shared what they learned with us in a compact and rather cheap form, so we should listen.
Myself, I try to read as much as possible and sometimes it is just not possible. Still, I am a vivid reader and I learn so much about the world and I hope you can become one, too.
7. If I could go back and do something else, would I do it?
NOT. As I said before I learned a great deal from writing this book. Indeed, I’ve learned some fundamental skills life by trying to talk about them. I’ve also learned how to do research, to write in interesting way, and I’ve tested a lot of ideas on myself before telling the world to do the same. Indeed, teaching others is a great way to become an expert of a certain subject and it is a last step in mastering any skill.
Two more books in production
When I finished my university thesis I told myself: “NEVER AGAIN”. This is because the project was very big and hard, but then I wrote a book. Irony.
Now that I finished one book, on one side I want to say “never again”, but on other side I have an idea for two more books which I am really excited about.
For now, I don’t want to share their names, but one book will be even more on specific on a topic of Happiness, while another goes into a topic of how we can make this world better for everyone to life in it.
I will probably spoil the title soon enough, as I usually just can’t help myself, and if I do so it will be first through my email list, which if you are curious bird you can get on immediately, but you can also read my other blog posts, too. This is because they will be a foundation for my future books to come.
